Today I have a hotel and restaurant tip in one for you. Thanks to the support of Bloggerday, I was able to experience a great free overnight stay at the Alte Posthalterei in Zusmarshausen and enjoy a mega menu on site. And I can highly recommend both the hotel and the restaurant.
How do I get to Zusmarshausen?
Zusmarshausen is located directly on the A8 between Stuttgart and Munich and has its own exit. The nearest major town is Augsburg.
The Hotel Alte Posthalterei is located directly in the town center and is hard to miss. There are plenty of parking spaces available in the hotel’s own parking garage or parking lot.
The best way to get here by train* is to travel to Augsburg and take the bus from there, which also runs regularly and stops close to the hotel.
Augsburg is also easy to reach by FlixBus* and you can continue your journey by bus.
The history of the Alte Posthalterei
The history of the Alte Posthalterei in Zusmarshausen dates back to 1648. At that time, the building was located on one of Europe’s main traffic arteries – on the postal route from Paris to Vienna. Every day, several carriages stopped in the village and brought new guests who wanted to stay overnight or enjoy refreshments on site.
In addition to Napoleon and his wife Marie Antoinette, the famous guests of the house included Tsars Nicholas I and Alexander II, Emperor Franz I of Austria, various kings of Bavaria and Württemberg and King Carl Gustav of Sweden. So if you have always wanted to follow in the footsteps of such illustrious personalities, this is the place for you.
Even back then, the focus was on culinary delights, as an old kitchen book proves. And absolutely nothing has changed to this day.
The hotel has been completely renovated and modernized since 2018. Everything has been given a fresh new coat of paint, but the charm of the old building has been preserved and still shines through in various places in the form of old beams, exposed brickwork and the beautiful stucco ceilings. The combination of old and new has been an outstanding success.
The grand opening celebration planned for March 22, 2020 unfortunately had to be canceled due to Corona, but the new operating couple Manuela and Marc Schumacher are starting fresh and full of energy and I can only congratulate them on their hotel and wish them continued success.
Staying at the Alte Posthalterei Zusmarshausen
There are various rooms available for overnight stays, depending on your budget.
In addition to the Napoleon Prince Room – the room in which the general himself is said to have spent the night – there is also the “Little Princess”. This is where Marie Antoinette is said to have laid her weary head. Both suites are equipped with a free-standing bathtub and walk-in closet. Pure luxury for those who want a little more.
For those traveling on a smaller budget, there are also 8 aristocratic rooms, 45 postman’s rooms, 10 coachman’s rooms and an apartment with its own kitchenette. So there is suitable accommodation for everyone.
I myself stayed in one of the postman’s rooms and was very satisfied. Everything was very clean and well-kept. The bed was great – neither too soft nor too hard and the soundproof windows meant that hardly any noise came in and your sleep was not disturbed.
I particularly liked the very personal handwritten welcome. It immediately made you feel at home. And with the welcome gift in the form of homemade chive oil, you can take a piece of the Alte Posthalterei home with you.
The staff were also very courteous and took care of everything immediately. One particularly nice member of staff even took care of my request after work. A very special service.
Conferences at the Alte Posthalterei
The hotel has four different conference rooms with state-of-the-art equipment. Companies are in good hands here and can offer their employees a lot. Thanks to large screens, which are also suitable for video conferences, the Alte Posthalterei in Zusmarshausen is perfectly prepared for the requirements after the Corona crisis and also for requests from international companies.
Relaxing at the Alte Posthalterei
And after work, pleasure awaits in the form of a beautiful wellness area with various saunas and relaxation areas. Here you can recharge your batteries and relax at the end of the day.
For the more active, there is also a fitness room with various equipment. So everyone can entjoy their stay.
Events at the Alte Posthalterei
The hotel is also ideal for any kind of event. The old vaulted cellar, in particular, is a perfect place for a cozy get-together. There, you can be alone and pampered.
There have also been several events at the Posthalterei, such as a murder mystery dinner and a cabaret. Unfortunately, these have to be put on hold for the time being due to the coronavirus crisis. But I hope they can resume soon. I always find these kinds of events very interesting.
Delicious food at the Alte Posthalterei Zusmarshausen
If you don’t want to stay overnight in the hotel, I definitely recommend the Alte Posthalterei restaurant, as I’ve rarely had such delicious food.
Chef Sandra Hofer may be very young at 23, but it’s immediately clear that it’s not for nothing that she was the German and Central European Youth Champion in cooking and achieved fifth place at the World Championships. She knows her craft and enchants the eye with beautifully presented plates and the palate with the most delicious dishes. Just reading the menu will make your mouth water.
The hotel and the restaurant are also very sustainable. You won’t find any plastic straws, and when it comes to the venison, they specifically point out that the whole animal is used, not just the saddle. This is very important these days and a good reason to choose the hotel.
After a delicious greeting from the kitchen in the form of three different homemade breads with handmade spread and homemade oil, I was able to enjoy the following delicious menu.
What else to do in Zusmarshausen?
After a hearty breakfast provided by the hotel, the Alte Posthalterei Zusmarshausen is an excellent starting point for various hikes and excursions.
There are various hiking options in the surrounding area, for example, at Lake Rothsee, on the Zusamaue Nature Trail, or on the Way of the Cross.
Or you can use your stay to visit Augsburg or Günzburg. Munich and Ulm are also less than an hour away by car. So there are various ways to spend your days here. There’s something for everyone.
Enjoy your time in this wonderful hotel
In summary, I can say that the visit to the Alte Posthalterei Zusmarshausen was definitely worth it, and I would definitely like to come back.
And if I’ve piqued your interest, please visit the hotel’s website. There you can find comprehensive information and book directly.
